Hello all and happy late new year! just a quick question, anyone have any idea what my rear deck is making rattling noises when subjected to heavy bass?

N.B:

i have 2 12" alpines in the trunk 2x250 watts rms, its all fine and dandy but when i crank it up my rear deck starts to rattle, ive seen many posts about stuffing tennis balls form inside the trunk but i have no holes that the speak about.

Any ideas how to stop the rattle?

Thank you in advance.

The car is very well insulated, its just that the deck vibrates because of the amount of air the subs are moving..... i need a quick solution to stop the deck from moving too much not to dissipate bass. :P ill post vids

I had the same problem in my 2000 323Ci with the Harman Kardon system. It's a common problem, I heard some people got it fixed for free at the dealer.

I fixed mine with a long bolt (3-4" long) and 2 nuts. I don't remember the exact procedure but the goal was to push up on the rear deck to prevent it from rattling. To do this I had to remove the 6x9" (and maybe the amp, I don't remember) to access a hole to be able to put the bolt from under the deck and lock it with the 2 bolts.

It worked like a charm. Never had any rattling since then (4 years ago).

You can look up the procedure with pictures on e46fanatics, just search for "harman kardon rattle fix" or something similar.

I'd drill a small hole and shoot some Great Stuff Pro "window and door" sealant in there

You can buy that stuff in any hardware store for about $15

That should quiet things right down

You have to be careful using that stuff. Some of them expand up to 3 times their wet volume and could cause the panel to distort. But I agree, the foam will kill any rattle.

oops, I posted the wrong picture. You have to get "Great Stuff PRO Windows and doors formula ... it's a 'minimally expanding' foam which is specially designed not to expand too much (or else it would bow window and door frames).

I just used about 20 cans of this stuff (on my house, not on my car) and it's great

The can looks like this :

Ditto, did the same bolt and nut $2.49 fix on my two E46's without any trouble.
