hello

I recebtly purchased a 84 euro 524td from a seller in Montreal who delivered the car to me in New York. When I went to register it in New York I was told by DMW that I need a "informal Entry Form" from US Customs to register the car in the states. I called US Customs and the tell me I need to contact BMW headquarters in Quebec and get a letter from stating that the car meets US requirements and then they can give me what I need... Anyone have this infor for me..BMW Headquarters in Quebec? or any other advice?

Thanks, Merci and all that appreciation
Walter

Ouch,

I don't know the exact details of importing into the US but the car you bought sounds like a Euro import into Canada. Canada has a loophole that any car older than 15 years from date of manufacture can enter the country. There are no safety/emissions/whatever requirements to the most part. Cars younger that that are impossible to get in unless they were specifically built for the US or Canadian market.

I believe that the US system doesn't use the car's age the same way. You might be stuck looking for information on a car that was never meant to be in Canada in Canadian sources.

Please, feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

I think the US exemption rule is 25 years.
You find lots of classic minis for sale on ebay, just over 25 yrs old.
In another life I almost bought a unimog that way. It would have been cool, but actual utility would have been limited. towing capacity of 20,000 pounds with a 94 horsepower engine. It will climb any hill, eventually. Oops. wandering off topic. Hey. The first sentence was sort of useful.
