View Full Version : Brake pad wear sensor melted at the track - E36 - oem brakes - HPS pads

After 2 days at Mont-Tremblant in July I noticed the wear sensors in the front and back both melted to the point of slipping out of the brake pad slot. They have to be replaced. They are unusable.

This was a first season at the track. I enjoyed myself and took it easy. The tires are 225 Kumho Ecsta SPT with a lot of grip compared to what I'm used to. Rotors are stock. Brake fluid was a week old at the time. I used Hawk HPS pads. Never experienced fade of any kind.

Is this a common problem ?

If not I suspect the weak link is the pads. Besides the lack of experience. That's a given.

Feel free to highjack this thread :-) You guys were a great help in making my first track season a success and a blast.

Thanks for the input.

While I've never heard of that happening, I can't say I'm really surprised. Your brakes get pretty hot out on the track; much hotter than they're ever going to get on the street.

Personally, I've pulled all the brake pad wear sensors out of my car years ago. They don't serve much purpose for folks like us. As long as you've got at least one good finger out of ten, it's easy enough to check pad thickness even without removing a wheel.

Those sensors are like 15$ each. Is the light on in the dash? If not ust zip tie the front sensor to the strut and the rear sensor to table. Those wear sensors are just for idiots that never have their cars inspected.

I indeed had no plan to plug them back in.
They are taped for now. I plan to remove them outright. Just don't want to trigger the dashboard light.

Glad to hear this is more or less normal. Thanks.
