Works on 1,2,3 settings, but #4 is same speed as #3
Just stopped working, could it be the relay?
It is usually a bad resistance behind the control knob.

Thanks for the tip,
Is it the control Knob with the Red & Blue or the Fan speed switch, if so is it hard to change?
The fan speed knob. It is not too difficult if your a professional mechanic or a good shade tree wrencher. If you are not handy, have a pro diagnosis the car and fix it. Not as easy as changing sparkplugs...

Thanks for the help this forum is great!
BTW On some cars the resistors are located next to the blower motor, inside the front cowl.

it is on e36 318
on the e30 the resistors are together with the motor not the knob. I assume the same situation on the e36. the reason i believe is because the high amps to power the motor should not go through your dash wiring.
but on the e30s if your resisitors burn then 1-2-3 position does not work and only 4 works so yours could be different. Try to find a wiring diagram.
A.
If only the #4 position works, then it is because the protection fuse/jumper on the resistance pack has blown. This fuse should reset itself when cooled with cold air, which is why it is located in the cowl, near the motor. THis is what my ETM mentions.

the problem in my case was only #4 only working - i replaced the whole resistor bord and when i looked at my old one - the so called "fuse" - fused instead of cutting out power and burned the resistor coils (fell off once i touched them) that could have been corosion as well though.
in the original poster's situation it behaves as #3 is equal to #4 so there is a probably a short somewhere.....

After everything cooled down all 4 postions started working like normal.
Agian thanks to all for the input and advice!
