I would do 17" if they fit over your calipers -they should- Rallye can also sell you replica BMW wheels for winter use, so you still have the look with out worrying about your OEM wheels!
17" replica is about $175 each, or you could always use steel I guess!
Call frank at Pneus Rallye, friend of mine, tell him "Chris with the BMW" sent you and you'll get the best price and better service.
They have the best machines to handle delicate oversized alloy wheels, and the most up to date alignment machine.

They like to sell Michelin, but will get you anything you want, also will rebalance for you at any time during the year.
good luck,
Chris

i was actually looking for a good local deal
i wont buy new tires and rims from a retailer, i can get much better prices in the US
thanks chris, appreciate ur time
for future reference, 17" clears E46M3 brakes, but stealies do not (probably due to the rear offset?)

If you're looking for winter tires I have 4 Pirelli Snowsports 210, 205/50/17 for sale. Half worn at a very good price. Dunno if the size is good for you though...

For the record, Francois at Pneus Rallye in Dorval (I'm assuming that's the Frank guy you were talking about earlier) is a very good guy. I've been referred there in the past and have sent a few guys as well. That's where I usually go for tires. There's also Talon that seems to give good deals for members here (although I've never been yet)
.02$

PS: 250$ for 4 (used) tires sounds like a good deal. I'd probably be all over it if I had 17" wheels to begin with :)
