View Full Version : wheel repair
the inside of 2 wheels got slightly damaged at mecaglisse. The scratches are superficial, but bare metal is still somewhat exposed over a relatively large surface, I was planning on leaving them like that at first... but after checking them again recently I believe it's not a good idea to leave bare metal unprotected inside a wheel. (I could probably just spray some cheap paint inside... but I'd rather have it done like it should at this point).
Can anyone reccomend a professional(good) wheel repair shop in montreal?
I was reccomended
P. Jaques
845 Second Ruisseau
CALIXA-LAVALLÉE, Quebec

Any word on that?
Thanks
P. Jacques does OK job. Not more. They straighten aluminum wheels with a cold process and turn them on a lathe, removing aluminum, which weakens wheels. Their paint work is only cosmetical as they usually will not paint the inside of the wheels. They will sand blast the whels, removing the excellent outside finish, BBS is known for. Perhaps you should only sand the scratch and apply some clearcoat. They mostly surviver thanks to insurance companies and un suspecting clients. If you had cheap wheels, I would say "Go for it". But not with your nice BBS.
yeah agree with lee, they are good for cheap rims, definately not bbs
Ok, thanks...
the damage is basically only "estetic". The only thing that was worrying me was leaving bare aluminium exposed to chemical components (brake dust, brake cleaner, oil, salt, etc...)
I will follow your advice and lightly sand the scratches and spray clearcoat on the damage only.

P Jacques did my 540 wheels a few times... now they are garbage, they weakened them so much by removing soooo much metal is was scary to see what they gave me back! One wheel ended up leaking from a pinhole it was so thin, another cracking again where they took off the inside lip.
I have heard there is another guy on Sources Blvd.... I will try to find the name for you Tuesday.
Friends of mine own Pneus Rallye, they deal with both places.

I had some really bad experiences with P Jacques
about 3 or 4 wheels I sent them they cracked while trying to straighten. Then they would do the world's shittiest welding jobs (looked like they were done by 5-year-olds) then they would say "the wheel is unrepairable" but you have to pay for their "repair attmpt" at full price of about $80 or $90. Rip-off.
Now I just say "screw it", I buy cheap wheels and if they become crooked I throw them in the garbage and buy new ones.

exactly the same experience as me. f0ckers!!!!!!!!!!
fuck... thank god I asked this here!!!
There is no structural damage to the wheels, as I said the damage is only estetic...
I had some concerns recently when I removed a wheel and saw that the "scratches" had brake dust "welded" to them as if it was attacking the bare aluminium.
It's not biggie, I'll have them fixed as new by real professionals over the winter...
I'm also ordering a set of cheap 17" dedicated track wheels...
200$ each... track proven cast wheels
17x10 ~ 18lbs
17x9 ~ 17.5lbs
flat black for that ghettoness track look :)

PM EFX aka John Lespoir. He can possibly recommend someone. I did get Audi S4 wheels fixed through him (Talon Tire actually) but I did not care about cosmetics. I don't remember if there are blemishes now or not. This was for a single piece wheel.
Those FN01R-C's are very nice wheels for the track. Light, strong, and cheap.

The paint and clearcoat have been stripped to the metal... and some more. I woudn't have normally bothered fixing this...
this picture as been taken the day of mecaglisse event
now the metal is not shinny anymore, it's black as brake dust... and will not come clean

it's hardcore cosmetic. The paint and clearcoat have been stripped to the metal... and some more...
I would just get a sander and a spray can. But that's just me. I still have rubber spots on my car from July. I think it finally stopped smelling of dampness inside.
that would be option A ... do a piss poor(relatively) job myself for a few $$$ (still need some equipment I don't have)...
option B... have it done by pros (autobugatti) for a little more $$$ and have them like new
I don't bother much with tar / rubber / chips... I have some a couple chips on the hood where bare metal is exposed... good thing of having aluminum hood
charcoal would look nicer on your silver car IMO ... but it's your call
there is also a gloss black with polished lip that is nice and purty, but they are a bit more expensive than the rest... which goes against the point...
I really like speedTT black "pirate" look :-) ... probably will go with flat black.

Nano,
I had a friend who worked at Bugatti last year... he was very disappointed with the quality of work they were doing at that time. They had been known to be the best, maybe not so anymore.
They actually drove and crashed a porsche of a client, then fixed it and never even told him!
They may do good work for some, but I have heard they hire some shoddy guys.

I was told they were the best in restoration up to recently.. they were vividly reccomended by a friend who had his car fixed there.
Anyway, I have plenty of time to find other people. wheels are off until next spring. Thanks for the headsup, I will investigate.

My Mag weel ( the one i use with my R compound Hankook z-211) are genuine VW New Beetle 16", with black paint Tremclad fast drying. I put funny sticker " GREG RACING TEAM" customise by a guy at Marché aux puces St-Eustache.Next year i will change my set of tires and weels for 17" X8 , 5X100 35 of set... probably Kosei K 1 Racing .Tire... probably TOYO RA-1
oh, I finally got the set of 5zigen FN01R-C for the track in 17" (flat black of course :D).
decided I wasn't ready for R-comps yet, and went with a good high performance tire instead... Falken RT615 in 255/40-17 and 275/40-17
unfortunately, the wheels are in backorder and they won't make it for springfling :(

that is what I ended up doing... turned out good

personally most shops in montreal are hacks when it comes to wheel repair.
P Jaques is decent, we have 20-30 wheels fixed a week at work by them and we havent had any come backs. The only problem I have with them is the wheel straightening and crack repair.
Exact wheel is the same except the paint peels 3 days later.
Auto Bugatti does amazing work, I visit the service manager on a weekly basis. Good people good work

A good paint job is all in the preparation. If the surface is not properly prepared, there would be problems with adhesion for sure.
