View Full Version : Brake Vibration...

due to me being stupid, I have had a minor case of brake vibration at mosport. The vibration is only present when braking from high speed, or hard and gets worse once brakes are hot.

the vibration occured almost right after I changed pads... I think I was too hard on the pads too soon. So my guess is I have uneven deposits on rotor surface...

I've been told this condition usually worsen if not cured fast.

Anything I can try before Mecaglisse to get rid of the vibration? Could be anything else beside the deposits? I did not have this at tremblant

Thanks

you can check http://www.carbotecheng.com/faq.htm

what type of pads did you put on? I know you're supposed to turn the rotors when changing from organic to certain high-performance compounds to remove the old pad transfer film.

Thanks for the link, good info...

the pads are the exact same as the ones I had before...

I would have the rotors turned (and ask them to remove as little metal as possible). Then bed in the pads on the clean rotor surface again.

Thanks, I thought about it... but I will wait a little more for turning them. The vibration is very very minor. I will probably not even feel it at mecaglisse. Everything feels great on the street, to feel anything you need to go above 150...

Also, I'm not 100% sure of the cause... pad deposits is the most likely, but it could be 20 other things... even something silly as overtorqued wheels (I still use one of those crappy 15$ torque wrenches :(...).

for mecaglisse I just will inspect everything, bleed brakes and make sure wheels are torque right... hopefully I'll be able to pinpoint the problem, or it will go away.... wishfull thinking :|

I've been told this condition usually worsen if not cured fast. Not really. Over time, the grumbling might actually improve as pad material gets deposited all over the rotor surface and the whole thing wears down a bit.

Anything I can try before Mecaglisse to get rid of the vibration? Could be anything else beside the deposits? I did not have this at tremblantOne trick is to put on some very aggressive race pads then drive around on the street. If you never let race pads heat up, they'll do a great job of scouring old pad material off your rotors. Just use the brakes very gently until you start to hear squealing. That's when the race pads are against metal. Take them off at that point, otherwise you might excessively wear the rotors.

The other trick is just to lay into the rotors with a scrubbing wheel. A coarse Scotchbrite pad also works, but your arms will fall off before you get the rotors clean.

Bottom line: don't sweat it.

I've read that slowly driving around(like in city driving), will unbed rotors slowly. Guess it may go away on it's own by just driving around town.

BTW, my instructor proposed to spray brake cleaner on the rotors to clean them. Thought it was a bit extreme...

Driving on race pads on the street is fun. Sometimes they squeal like a dump truck.

I often would get vibrations when the pads are new and the bedding in was not perfect. After 1 session it all goes to normal.

If new pads are glazed then sand with 40 grit. Re install new pads and you should be good to go if uneven deposit is your problem.

If new pads are glazed then sand with 40 grit. When working on brakes, wear a respirator if you have one.

Brake dust isn't the healthiest thing.

I'm going to buy one... between brake dust, brake cleaner, K&N filter oil, bug spray and whatnot... one is in order!

You can also simply rub the pads o the asphalt. That is the usual racers way.

I'm going to buy one...I have a 3M #07178 (http://products3.3m.com/catalog/us/en001/auto_marine_aero/automotive_aftermarket/node_GSW2FMFMTKgs/root_GST1T4S9TCgv/vroot_GSLPLPKL4Xge/bgel_295JQ4NWXRbl/gvel_3ZKQHJTG5Wgl/theme_us_aad_3_0/command_AbcPageHandler/output_html) (see picture below), it cost me less than ~$45 but there's a disposable version 3M #7192 (http://products3.3m.com/catalog/us/en001/auto_marine_aero/automotive_aftermarket/node_GSM9X9889Zgs/root_GST1T4S9TCgv/vroot_GSLPLPKL4Xge/bgel_NV4S784M8Mbl/gvel_3ZKQHJTG5Wgl/theme_us_aad_3_0/command_AbcPageHandler/output_html) which is even cheaper, maybe $30.

You need something with cartridges listed OV ("organic vapor", for working in places with strong fumes like brake cleaner, paint thinner, spray painting, etc) and P95 ("particulate filter", to catch brake dust and other fine air-borne contaminants).

The white pad (top right) is the P95 particulate filter. The cartridge (bottom right, with plastic screening) is the OV organic vapor filter.

HIGHLY recommended.

that's awesome... did you buy in montreal or online? Who carries 3m masks?

I think I bought it at UAP ... it was YEARS ago so I'm not sure anymore

But you can find respirators in any place that sells auto body supplies and automotive paint

They're really amazing. Even washing my brake discs with a rag soaked in lacquer thinner (a really, really strong solvent) I couldn't smell anything.
