Yes, the condition is that it's gotta be a Bimmer (or Mini?) They say limited parking, but the outdoor lot opposite the Bell Center has a capacity of about 400 cars (part of which would be used for the Concours).

Let me know if you still have problems (abrami@education.concordia.ca) and I'll get in touch with BMW Group Canada about it. They really want a high club turnout and the concours should be absolutely first rate.
Phil
Dealing with BMW Canada's staff has always been a pleasing experience, but maybe it is time to seat with them and explain them that if they have high expectations for a first rate event, then they should also provide a much longer prep time. One week to set-up the event of the year is perhaps a bit short and certainly not enough for our very small club to have much impact. Especially that all the club's resources are already monopolized by daily routine and club events.
Would 3 months ahead be too early to start making announcements? I don't think so. This is the required time for gathering a decent spectrum of cars. The guys from Withby have been made famous for their lack of anticipation, and they have proven once again that their reputation is not far fetched.

Lee--
You continue to display a negative bias towards our distributor, BMW Group Canada, which I hope you overcome some day soon. The facts in this case are different than you make it seem.
In early March, at my meeting with our new rep, the possibility of an F1 concours was mentioned and I communicated the possibilty to all national directors on March 10. Early in May, the details began to take shape and I was contacted again by BMW and asked for my input. These details were also communicated to all national directors early in May with a couple of follow-ups thereafter. So there was lots of advance notice before the details were finalized.
Despite your misrepresentation, I hope you register for the event and even find some way to have both your 2002 and E30 M3 on display.
It looks to me that with all the extras BMW has thrown in, it should be a highlight event of the year.
Phil Abrami
National President
Phil, this not being negativist, it is being critical of a pretty "loose" organization. Only one week prior to the event has the full info been available. This is even disrespectfull. The story seems to repeat itself year after year after year...And each year we beg for more. It has been the same for the past years, since M Night started. Especially that this "special invitation" is not only for club members, but for everyone with a BMW or Mini. Maybe that the BMW Club of Canada looks good in the process, but it is the BMW Club of Quebec that gets to deal with the problems when our atual ask force is very limited.
As representing the presidency of the national club, I will respect your point of view as it is obviously the one from BMW Club of Canada. But agreeing to a decision at a meeting and actually doing the field work, there is a huge gap. Our chapter is more than willing to help, but under respectfull timelines and conditions.

Last weekend, I discovered that 4 hours nonstop on the bike is actually quite painful. From Providence to Montreal is more like 6 hours non-stop.) Since I'd be under some time pressure thursday night (work, then drive to montreal, still have time to sleep), I would have to do the drive nearly non-stop, so I've decided to wimp out and take the mini.

Thanks Phil! The other alternative would be to tow the m coupe up and scrape it off the trailer onto the concours with a spatula, but I'll skip that possibility.

I'm not sure how many other mini-ites are lurking here. There is a mini dinner 6/8. It is being organized by mini dealers somehow. I was in touch with the appropriate bmw.ca people representing mini, and they said "talk to the montreal dealers". I didn't investigage further, since I'll probably skip the mini dinner in favor of drinking way too much pineapple juice with andrei, gregster, and andrei's hot date that night.

I just received confirmation from the BMW Rep. For the Concours on Saturday June 9th, they are willing to provide our club a small space inside the BMW registration tent (we would have a small table a couple of chairs). We can use this opportunity to pass out the pamphlets and to talk to the visitors about our club.
There are conditions to this...... as we would be the guests within the BMW tent, we have to respect their rules (i..e respect their company, what they stand for and most importantly, respect their customers).
We need volunteers to man this spot. We would have to be there to set up for 11AM and the Concours I gather would finish at around 7pm. The volunteers must dress appropriately for the occasion (i.e. no jeans, no t-shirts).
All those interested please PM me.
Tks
Henry

This was the oldest of the 5 racers at the BMW Concours today. A timeless classic is like good wine. It gets better with age. No Bango (er.... Bangle) influence also helps.
The 3.0 CSL is indeed 35 year old. The M1 beside is 10 year younger.
The cars of BMW NA were very nice, so the BMW girls too;) .
But I think it is awesome to see those cars from so close and the listen to the mclaren f1 gtr with the 12 throttles slightly opened.
The dinner was good and we have been well treated for shure.
I would I loved to have a closer look the the csl engine and stuff but it will be for next time I guess.
I hope necxt year there will be more BMW owners with their awesomes cars, but if the message is sent a little bit earlier it would be nice for shure.

There were definitely some awesome cars yesterday.
I took plenty of pics and when I find time to resize them I'll post them up.
I believe with longer notice more cars would have showed, but the cars that did show were all quality cars.
I'm disappointed I didn't see Karim though, but I did see his two cars :p
Hey Boxcarracer, I am sure you have noticed Nadim's Gucci-edition e46 :D
The event was nicely organized and the staff on the parking lot as well as in the restaurant was first class. The restaurant's food selection and service were exceptional and several notches above Alexandre as in previous years. Foie gras, smoked salmon, duck prosciuto, great selection of hot dishes and exceptional wine and cheeses. That restaurant was top. It is true that if the whole event had been advertized (at least) a month ahead, there would have been a much greater attendance. But the BMW Canada organizers have taken notice and were still pleased with what they saw. Next year will be better... :p
The only cloud in this perfect evening was the out-of-place and extremely agressive attitude of a dealership salesman against another's dealership salesman. Must be a tough job with a lot of tension  The professional restaurant staff managed to keep the situation under control.

Hey Guys,
I wanted to just let everyone that didn't go it was only a small group of cars 16 cars in the customized section maybe 30 in the M class and another 15 in the classic. I expected alot more cars maybe at least double or triple that amount. Yes the parking was free to all BMW owner and all participants rec'd an Official BMW F1 hat in either white or navy blue. The cocktails and food was great along with some wine of course. Hopefully they will do it again next year and have a better turnout again. If you want to check out the F1 events sat night thats definately the place to park. They had police securing the lot and alot of exposure for you club or teams. As for the prizes they gave out prize mage out of almost a 1/2 inch of glass with a die cast metal bmw model best in class in either M, Classic or customized.

In fact a total of 151 people signed up for the event. How that number whittled down to about 60 is beyond me. However, the event went well and I am sure that if they were to hold something similar next year, it can only get better.

As I mentioned in THIS THREAD (http://www.bmwquebec.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=2550), I'm afraid I don't have the resources to do an exotic, one-off swap. I'll have to do something a little more mainstream. I notice that I'm now relatively close to Pete McHenry of Precision Performance Services, Inc. (Winston-Salem, NC). Pete's the daddy of M20 strokers as well as M50/S50 swaps.
Seems a 3.0L M20 bottom end (using a modded S52B32US crank, stock S52 rods, and 2mm oversize forged pistons) mated to a Metric Mechanic "Hi-Flow" head will yield around 240hp with supporting intake mods. I can use my nice Hartge tubular long headers :) and all the brand new engine ancilliaries I've already dumped good money on (including my Accusump and oil cooler kit). Cost would be in the neighborhood of $5K USD, which is about what swapping in a used S50 would run. But this would be a brand new engine...not to mention lighter and more original.
Rebuilding my existing engine with top-notch parts is much less work than fitting an LS1, F20C, Duratec 2.3, M10 turbo, or even S50. Something to consider, anyway.
Emre
I was just hoping you had gone crazy (LS1 is actually not that crazy, at least from what you have ALWAYS been sayin).
but yeah, makes a lot more sense, and still a very very very sweet swap, and keeping it BMW is big plus imo.
If I had a garage in which to work (not to mention a lift, engine hoist, and air tools) and plenty of time, then an exotic swap would be feasible. When I'm paying shop rates to get the swap done, it becomes less realistic to stray so far from the beaten path.
With an M20 stroker, I can collect the parts myself, have the bottom end built up using any old M20B25 block, order a built Metric Mechanic head, then have the engine bolted together and dropped into the car one afternoon. Much more reasonable when time and workspace are at a premium.
Not to mention, I like the idea of running a brand new engine...especially one that's under warranty from Metric Mechanic and a respected builder.

I'm sure it's going to be a sweet engine
post some updates, the board gets so few of these projects threads

Why not run the complete Metric Mechanic Engine? They made a 3.3L M20 if I'm not mistaken..and then the entire engine is garantied.
Why not run the complete Metric Mechanic Engine? They made a 3.3L M20 if I'm not mistaken..and then the entire engine is garantied.Because the complete engine I'm interested in would run ~$8500 USD plus tax plus shipping both ways (otherwise, you add a hefty core charge) from MM. The MM "HiFlo" head by itself is just $2000 USD, and that's where all the magic is. The "HiFlo" head is a steal considering everything that goes into it: port-n-polish, cams, tested rocker arms, larger valves, dual valve springs, new retainers, and new oil rail. So, you'd be paying an extra $6500 for the bottom end, which is pretty steep considering how little work goes into it (basically just a machined crank, stock rods, and forged pistons).
A 3.0L bottom end is very easy to build on a smaller budget. It looks like I can do it for ~$3000 in parts and labor at a good shop. On top of that, building it locally would save me from having to ship the short block back and forth across the country.

So instead of paying up front for a proven solution you will "save money" buy experimenting with your own concoction going DIY or trying to involve local mechanics who hear your ideas for the first time in their lives.
Let us know how that goes and what is the final tally.
Unless you have a shop heavily involved in BMWCCA racing. Then just buy whatever they think is the "best" solution. Don't be the first guy to try something with them. Leave that to John Danskin :)

Who is poorer, and sadder, but probably not wiser yet. I'm just going to adjust the camber and alignment. I swear. And maybe the pedals (too small for reliable heel/toe).

Sure...
did you find a place that sells decently priced brake parts yet?

I'm wearing the pilotis that look like leather tennis shoes with this car. I don't have a heel&toe prayer with my little red booties. I have some caterpillar boots that are wider, but sensitivity is compromised.

I'm going to try to stay with the stock JCW brakes/pads/rotors for now. I made the brake ducts functional, although not to the point of installing tubes all the way to the rotors, and I'm switching to motul rbf 600 fluid, which at $34US/liter is still just about free compared to big brakes and their associated parts. If this isn't enough to eliminate fade, I'll try the tubes and castrol SRF. I would really like to avoid a big brake kit. The JCW brakes seem to stop fine, although I haven't had the car at a real track yet (just sanair which isn't a big braking track). The other thing I want to try is not braking so much...
And I need to remove the backing plate.
The JCW brakes which are stock with this car are a little pricey to run with pads at $185 and rotors at about $240, but that's way-cheap compared to what it costs to run big brakes.

I also have a pair of Pilotis. I find they make lousy driving shoes. The soles are too thick to feel the pedals.
Why don't you diplomatically try to find out who makes JCW brake pads , and just try to buy a few set of plates without material on them? (JCW doesn't make them for sure, but they may have exclusive license though).
May be tricky to get, but who knows

Let us know how that goes and what is the final tally.I'm not sure if you were referring to my post with this. If you know the E30, you know Pete McHenry of Precision Performance Services, Inc. He was one of the first guys doing M50/S50 swaps into E30s back in the early 1990's. And he's been building M20 strokers for 20 years. M20 strokers are as much of a "proven solution" as anything else. Ditto for Metric Mechanic heads. So, I'm not sure what you're going on about.
As for "saving money," the cost of building an M20 stroker is considerably greater than dropping an M50 (or even S50) into the car. In fact, the main reason you don't see more M20 strokers is because it's so much cheaper to drop in a used M50/S50. Hell, the MM HiFlo head costs more than a complete M50 drivetrain. But I'd rather have a "new" (i.e., freshly built) engine than a used one. Besides, even the S50 is no great shakes...certainly not worth the excess weight in my book.

carbotech will do this. First I need a worn out set of jcw pads, which I don't have yet. I'm not going to send them a $185 set of brand new pads.
the jcw pads don't seem to be that bad if I can get past the brake fade, although of course, pads are part of this. They are a pretty grippy sport pad. I'll see what happens with more airflow and better fluid at calabogie.

Satisfied Performance has a line of performance brake pads (gransport). I think they make custom apps too. Might want to check them out also

no, I think you're supposed to send them the worn-out ones, and install the brand new pads on the car while you wait. :)
that's my plan. In the meantime, I have to wear out two sets of jcw pads until I can switch to carbotech, if I still want to. This could take all summer, so I need to figure out how to make these pads work for me. All I know so far is that my brakes were fading at sanair with stock fluid and no brake duct openings.

in a perfect world you would need two set of pads. When one is worn out being re-built at carbotech, the other is brand new on the car. So you never have to worry about pads. In theory once your JCW pads are finished, you should be starting to wear out a second set.
[edit] ops, hadn't read "two sets"... too hot today to read properly before I post
