Hi,
tonight I went out to have a test drive for an used 528i 1997. Silver int/out, all options, low millage 123000km not rust with new alternator, front shocks, front brakes and 4 new Yokohama rubber.
Very clean inside and just a few dings on the body.
Everything looks OK but there is one big problem with the automatic transmission.
It looks like the car has only two gears, 1st and 2nd.
On the highway at 100 kph the engine was doing 5000rpm.
I stopped the car and shut the engine. Then I started it and try the autostick in all gears. Except for the lowest gear, all others seems to be the 2nd gear. Neutral is neutral, Reverse is reverse and Park is park.
The seller said that the car started to do this two weeks ago but not every day.
I drove the car for 20 minutes and I stopped the engine three times and it was doing it all the time.
Does someone has an idea before I go and have the car check by a mechanic ?
