how to reset check engine???

hi guys , was wondering if anyone knows how to reset the check engine light and airbag light on a 1997 m3 (e36) . is there codes for this ???

the easiest i think is disconnecting the battery for like an hour... it might have other side effects on your particular car though. - but if you fix your problems i think after a certain number of restarts (its 60 on the E30) the light goes away. If you don't fix the problem the lights will come back on even after a reset.

Normaly you don't need to wait that long.... You juste unplug the batteri then get in you car then press your brake pedal for about minut or two... to get the electric system empty... Then you should get set... on My Mazda I do that way and it's working well.... That could be different on the BMW cars but that would suprise me a lot !... :);)

On E30 it is just a matter of disconneting the battery for a few seconds. I had to do this few times when I first got the car...by that time various people (web forums) were talking of 1 or 2 hours disconnect even up to overnight!

That is a great tool. Also, the trick to reset the service interval light is simply to jump two contacts on the diagnostic plug. This method is well explained in the "BMW Enthusiast companion"book and probably everywhere on the net.

pour ce qui est de la batterie je ne crois pas que cela puisse fonctionner car j'ai ma lumière de changement d'huile d'allumé depuis l'an passé et j'ai dépluggé la batterie tout l'hivers et elle est encore allumé.
«the trick to reset the service interval light is simply to jump two contacts on the diagnostic plug.» et de quels contact exactement parle tu ? moi j'ai le tit livre haynes de ma bmw mais ils disent d'aller chez le concessionnaire...et ce serait un peu insultant pour une mécano d'aller dans un garage! et si tu peux me repondre sur mon email si tu veux ce serai gentil car jai un peu de difficulté avec mon anglais! désoler!

Bon. Là, je vais prendre ma règle en bois et taper sur plusieurs mains. "Aide-toi et le ciel t'aidera" disait le sage et son copain Lee.

Alors j'ai tapé " BMW service interval light" et j'ai trouvé une floppée de sujets. Dont celui-ci. J'espère que ça répond à vos questions.

D'ailleurs, ne te gênes pas d'écrire en français. Moi aussi il faut que je fasse des efforts de ce côté là. C'est le site du Québec après tout. Par réflex, beaucoup d'entre nous écrivent en anglais, mais c'est à cause de l'habitude des site américains.
