OK guys, bear in mind that my camera isn't exactly the best nor are my photography skills. Plus the amount of people that were at M night, it was hard to get a good shot of the cars without someone shoving or getting in the way. In any case, here are some pics:

Thanks Emre. Thought you might like the pics of the M1 racer :p . Was hoping that they would have opened up the hood to show the engine but didn't happen. Plus the CSL racer was really nice too. I was expecting to see Lee's 2002ti there, especially since it's rare and plus with all the mods he's done to the car. Would've been a nice little addition to some of the classic BMW cars that were there. Anyways, guess M night wasn't all that bad this year. I sure enjoyed it more than last year. :D

Thanks Emre. Thought you might like the pics of the M1 racer :pYeah, the M1 ProCar is pretty much my "dreamcar." I saw a white M1 with ProCar body kit up for sale in Ft. Lauderdale a few years back. They were asking "only" $60,000 USD for it, which is actually quite a good price considering BMW only produced around 400 M1's and this one was in pristine condition. Unfortunately, $60K USD was way out of my league at the time. Still is, actually ;)

Yup. The M1 is the second "Italian" BMW. The first one was the Isetta, built undedr license. The M1 was designed by Maserati but they took the money and ran. Leaving BMW with 400 bodies and bird cage frames. They are Either Karman or Bauer assemble the cars. During the Procar days, the M1s were being destroyed in big numbers. It is also my dream car. The 3.5 mechanically injected motor sure is a pure bred race motor.

It is true that between an e46 M3 and an M1, I would pick the M1 without even having second thoughts.

Wasn't the M1 body designed by Guigiaro and the chassis was built by Lamborghini?

Wasn't the M1 body designed by Guigiaro and the chassis was built by Lamborghini?Yes, that is what I've read too. The few cars Lamborghini actually completed had such poor assembly quality that they were shipped to Baur for final fit and finish. Eventually, the whole operation moved back to Germany and was split bewteen Baur and Karmann.

It's a shame the M1 was such a financial disaster for BMW. It probably kept BMW out of the supercar game. It would be nice to see the flagship of BMW's line-up being a mid-engine supercar rather than the succession of bloated pig GT's (like the E31 850csi and new E63 M6) we got instead.

We do know they can make a supercar engine (McLaren F1). I don't think it would have been impossible to make a body to match that. Maybe not as fancy as the F1 but something in the NSX or 911 Turbo price range.

I agree with that too.....I mean aren't the new M5 and M6 engines a 507BHP V10's? I figure they can mount one of those in a well constructed chassis and then it could be something along the lines of a Carrera GT with it's V10 engine. I guess BMW might be a little hesitant to go out and produce another mid engine supercar, especially with all the problems that they encountered when the M1 was being put through production. Hopefully, they'll learn from their mistakes.

for the same reasons porsche and ferrari do not build sedans... BMW does not build mid-engined 2 seaters.

now, the reason porsche builds a SUV remains a mystery :) (a very successful mystery as the cayenne accounts for 1/2 of the entire porsche production if I'm not mistaken)

The M1 was BMW's supercar from the early eighties. The only problem came from dealing with an Italian firm on the verge of bankrupcy (Maserati to be more precise). Then came the McLarens with BMW V12. I would be delighted with a V10-powered supercar with mid engine. That would be a perfect link with BMW's involvment in highly visible and costly F1. Only glitch is that it will take away sales from the M5 and M6, and that it cost a lot to homologate. BMW has many nice high-powered car, but none would be as glittering as a mid-engined supercar.

Honda is mostly a fwd econobox maker but it does not stop them from making the NSX and the S2000 to show of their engineering abilities.
BMW is more than capable of making a mid-engine car.

Porsche did make front engine rear drive cars in the 80's. If not for the 1987 recession they would still be making them.

The only problem came from dealing with an Italian firm on the verge of bankrupcy (Maserati to be more precise). Not to be anal about it...but it was Lamborghini that BMW contracted to produce the M1. BMW felt they had experience with producing composite-bodied cars (remember, the Countach had fiberglass bodywork) plus they were the ones that literally invented the mid-engined supercar (the Miura was the world's first).

And then there were the two Italdesign "Nazca" prototypes from the early 1990's.

Exactly, economic recession... I have no doubt each would make awesome cars. I never said they couldn't....

But are you positive they would be able to live off those cars? Honda doesn't exactly live off the S2000, and even less on the nsx.

For such niche markets as porsche and ferrari, and to lesser extent BMW, it's an extremely risky venture. Consider BMW just recently released a compact car...

Basically, the whole Mclaren F1 was designed by Gordon Murray and the Mclaren team. While BMW has good experience building engines and sports cars, building a mid engined sports car from scratch is a completely different feat. The results could be sub-par compared to the competition, ultimately putting BMW motorsports under a bad light.

I remember a joint project between cagiva and ferrari a few years ago to produce a race motorcycle engine... In the end, Ferrari(racing) developped an engine that was twice as heavy and less powerfull than what cagiva was currently using. The project was trashed...

BMW already owns the super sedan niche market to themselves. Why try something risky? That's the reason you won't see anything midengined from them. They are so good at what they do, that they are extremely reluctant at trying anything else.

I doubt Honda is making money with their "halo" cars. That is not the point of making them. Same with M cars. They are not generating too many profits for BMW but they do bring people in showrooms.

I don't call for BMW to make a supercar now as their hands are tied with all the product launches but in the future they could make one just to show off.

I am sure they will make one sooner or later and it will kick ass. But Execs rarely appreciate any form of risk. Some F1 success should be a good motive to jump into something new, unfortunately there hasn't been enough success there imho.

They have the Z4 coupe coming apparently, so a midengined sports car in that range is unlikely anytime soon(which is what most of us would appreciate I believe). If anything comes, it will be ludicrously powerfull and fast... and costly.
