Cherif was there too. It was not a test drive for drivers. It was a mercantile attempt at trying to impresse commuters...

Yes I was there.

I wrote a little wrap up that Andrei will put in the 'Article' section.

Like Lee said, It was a mercantile attempt at trying to impresse commuters..., in a way, yes. All these setups made by BMW have only one goal, convince people to buy their cars.

It was far from the Volvo test drive that Emre did at Tremblant, but more like an autocross setup.

You have to look at it as an <enhanced dealer test drive>

I put some pictures in the gallery section.

I have posted the article.

I did not expect it to allow a "proper" test drive. Alex went last year to the Subaru launch of the new Legacy/Outback and it was similar.
I bet it would be easier to do a better drive at the dealer. Just take a few highway ramps faster than an average SUV.

But this event is good to find out about all the new features. Because it is well structured and has all the presentation materials in place it is better that talking to a salesman at a dealership.

It was far from the Volvo test drive that Emre did at Tremblant, but more like an autocross setup. The Volvo people had a different agenda. They wanted to convince European sportscar enthusiasts that the S60R sedan and V70R wagon were "M3 killers." That's why they invited a bunch of PCA and BMW guys to Tremblant. It turned out to be a bad move for Volvo, since no one was impressed ;)

I guess BMW is trying to showcase their safety advancements and all the new high-tech gadgets in the E90. It makes sense to do this at a lower speed rather than at Tremblant. It sounds like BMW was targeting a different buyer in this case. I guess we'll have to keep waiting for the "M" version of the new 1-series to see anything like a true sports sedan from BMW now.

BTW, I do like the splitters on the front end:

Don't hold your breath. I checked out the specs of current 1er and the weight difference from a 120i to a 320i is only 50 kg. If that is the case then I would go for the one that will come with a 400 hp V8.

I guess BMW has totally lost the plot.
